SAVAGE!

Hello,

Its about time for another post and this piece is titled, SAVAGE! Being inspired by the works of Robert E. Howard and the Conan books ever since I was young, I wanted to do some Barbarian themed pieces. I have kept the brush strokes loose which creates a lovely sense of fluidity and movement. I loved painting the metal of the helmet. One can see the thinner transparent shadow areas transitioning towards the more opaque, lighter areas with the final impasto highlight.

I normally use mediums with all my oil pantings which I make myself out of Dammar Varnish, Pure Turpentine and either Cold Pressed Linseed oil or Refined Linseed oil [I don't use Safflower oil as its not as strong as other oils I mentioned but it yellows less which is a benefit when using paler colours] but I decided to use the oil straight out of the tube with no mediums and no thinnning at all. I really enjoyed it and I will do some more without mediums but when layering and using more stages its better to use a medium to control the drying of the oils and also most importantly the fat over lean method which when making your own mediums you can control the amounts more accurately.

Hope you like this piece, it was an absolute pleasure to paint. I definitely plan on doing more of these soon!

Kind Regards,

E.P.
