Early Stages of the Barbarian and Perseus paintings

Hi,

I thought I would show a few early stages of the Barbarian and Perseus paintings. The Barbarian painting has had a umber wash and you can see the white impasto [calcium carbonate or whiting as its also known] to give it some body and presence. The coloured Perseus pic is at the movement of light [in the flesh] and big form modelling stage [red material] where each part has the overall form described with not worrying about the subtle halftones and other minor forms within the main form. The shadow areas are left at this stage as there is little detail as the lighting is quite sculptural and contrasting keeping the main detailing in the light areas.

Kind Regards,

E.P.
